Insulin is a hormone that turns the sugars in the foods we eat into energy. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot make or use insulin correctly and sugar (glucose) accumulates in the blood. There are different types of diabetes. Type 1 is when the body cannot make insulin at all. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin shots or use an insulin pump. In Type 2 diabetes, the body cannot properly use the insulin that it makes or it does not make enough insulin. Most people with diabetes have Type 2.
When a person has diabetes, the sugar stays in the blood. This can damage different parts of the body such as blood vessels, eyes, nerves and kidneys. For diabetes treatment, it is especially important to keep blood sugar and blood pressure under control and have healthy habits that reduce the risk of developing the complications of diabetes, such as kidney disease.

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease. When the blood vessels in the kidney are injured, the kidneys cannot properly filter or clean waste products from your blood. Diabetic kidney disease can be prevented by keeping blood sugar in the target range. When kidney disease is detected early, several treatments may keep kidney disease from getting worse. Diabetes treatment with diet and drugs can help manage diabetes and prevent complications, but some people may still develop kidney disease, even with good care. About 30 percent of patients with diabetes eventually will get kidney disease.
The Rogosin Kidney Center nephrologists aim to diagnose and treat early kidney disease to prevent further progression and complications. Our team of nephrologists, nurse practitioners, dietitians and social workers provide comprehensive care for patients with diabetes and kidney disease. Because symptoms related to kidney disease and diabetes may only occur in later stages of the disease, it is important to have regular visits with a nephrologist. In addition, because hypertension is a major contributing factor in the development of kidney damage for people with diabetes, the Rogosin Kidney Center has nephrologists who are experts in the treatment of hypertension.
