The Rogosin Institute has been involved in basic and clinical research trials for over 45 years. These efforts support the mission of RI to bring the results of research to patients as quickly as possible and to provide the best care possible. Basic research involves experiments and studies that occur in a laboratory setting. Clinical research trials involves the participation of human volunteers to help answer questions about new treatments or new ways of using known treatments (drugs and/or procedures) for diseases.
Clinical Research
Clinical research is used to assess the safety and efficacy of medications and treatments in humans. The Rogosin Institute has been involved in clinical research for the treatment of chronic renal disease, end stage renal disease, transplantation, polycystic kidney disease, sepsis and lipid disorders (related to cholesterol). The Institute conducts Phase I, II, III and IV studies in all these therapeutic areas. RI has participated in the early phase of clinical research for many commercially available medications for the treatment of cholesterol, lipid disorders, renal disease and transplantation. Our researchers have worked with over 25 pharmaceutical companies and more than 20 contract research organizations.
In addition to involvement in clinical drug trials, RI was directly involved in the development of LDL-apheresis, an extracorporeal treatment for patients with severe hypercholesterolemia. This treatment device, Liposorber, LA-15, is now available throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Research Administration
Bruce R. Gordon, M.D. is Director of Clinical Research Program. Dr. Gordon has over 25 years experience in clinical research and has been the Principal Investigator for over 25 clinical trials.
Betty-Jane Sloan, BS, MA, CCRC is the Clinical Research Manager. She has more than 20 years experience in clinical research. She was certified in 1995 as a clinical research coordinator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and is a Staff Associate in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.
RI Physicians
The majority of physicians at The Rogosin Institute have experience as a Principle Investigator and all are experienced research investigators in both sponsored or investigator initiated trials.
Research/Support Staff
The Rogosin Institute offers four fill-time clinical research coordinators and two full-time nurse practitioner research coordinators. All of our coordinators have more than two years experience in clinical research.
Investigator Training
All investigators and coordinators at Rogosin complete "the CITI Program" training in human research subjects protections.
Institutional Review Boards
Every clinical trial in the U.S. must be approved and monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). An IRB is an independent committee of physicians, statisticians, and others whose objective is to ensure that a clinical trial is ethical and the rights of study participants are protected. The IRB initially approves the research and conducts periodic reviews.
The Rogosin Institute can conduct clinical research studies using either central (commercial) Institutional Review Boards (IRB) or the local IRB of the Weill Cornell Medical College or Rockefeller University.

Facility Description
Renal studies are conducted at our dialysis facilities in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Therapeutic trial areas include:
- Chronic renal insufficiency involving subjects who are pre-dialysis
- End stage renal disease (ESRD) involving subjects who are on hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or nocturnal dialysis
- Polycystic kidney disease
- Hypertension; primary and secondary (to renal disease)
- Transplantation (kidney and kidney/pancreas)
Cholesterol and lipid studies are conducted at our Comprehensive Lipid Control Center located in Manhattan. Therapeutic trial areas include:
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Hypertriglyceridemia
- Low HDL
- Metabolic syndrome
The Rogosin Institute has access to both NewYork-Prebysterian Hospital/Weill Cornell and Rockefeller University’s Clinical Research Centers for inpatient studies.
The Rogosin Institute employees one full-time database systems manager and one full-time applications developer to provide our investigators with data management for investigator initiated studies.
MIQS Disease Manager Plus™, a computerized informational network system, is utilized at The Rogosin Institute. MIQS provides enhancement of record keeping as well as immediate access to information on a patient’s history, treatment and laboratory data at all Rogosin Institute facilities and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell.
