See the latest from our cancer and diabetes program
The Rogosin Institute, Xenia, Ohio Division was established by the Rogosin Board of Directors in 1997 as a formal research program for the development of new ways to treat diabetes and cancer, both subjects of great importance to the work of the Institute in kidney disease. The creation of the Xenia Division recognized the progress that Rogosin’s research in these two areas had made since the early 1990s. Locating the Division in southwestern Ohio was mandated by the program’s need to be close to the hogs that are the donor source for the insulin-producing cells used for the unique treatment of diabetes being developed by Rogosin.
Rogosin’s Xenia Division reflects a unique partnership among the Institute, Bob Evans Farms, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, and MetMedical, Inc, of the Metromedia group of companies, Today the Xenia Division consists of world-class research and production facilities, including a 15,000 sq ft free-standing building, devoted to the new treatments for cancer and diabetes (See Cancer Research and Diabetes Research descriptions) Specific facilties include the Islet Isolation and Purification Laboratory, Analytical and Cell Culture Laboratory, the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Laboratory for Immunological Research in Diabetes, and a series of cancer macrobead research and production laboratories. The Division employs some thirty scientists and administrative and technical support staff
With the progress of the programs, plans are now underway to expand the facilities by 30,000 square feet so that the manufacture of the macrobeads used to deliver the treatments can be increased several-fold and more people helped. The increased macrobead production will be carried out by a state-of-the art robotic system, which has been developed specifically for these projects.
The Xenia Division works closely with the New York’s Rogosin headquarters. Weekly teleconferences play an important role in monitoring and directing both the diabetes and cancer research. Selected Xenia staff, Rogosin executive staff in New York City, and Metromedia Inc. executives all participate in this major effort. Successful treatment of diabetes, for example, could prevent to help more pat the kidney damage all too often associated with this disease.
