Transplantation Update 2010

As we usher in 2010, we are happy to report that we have had a very busy and productive year in our transplant program. Thankfully the many patients on our waiting list are getting transplanted, many before they ever reach dialysis. We routinely transplant over 230 patients per year. After the transplant surgery at the Rogosin Wing of the NewYork Presbyterian Weill Cornell Mediacl Center the patients are followed closely at Rogosin’s Dreyfus Clinic. The expertise of our physicians and nurses helps to ensure the success of the transplant. We have enjoyed a success rate second to none in our region and the NewYork Presbyterian Hospital has been ranked #2 in the country for kidney diseases.*

Rogosin doctors have had a close relationship with the transplant surgeons at our hospital. With the acquisition of two new surgeons, David Leeser, MD and José Figueiro, MD, we have been able to grow the volume of both kidney and pancreas transplants. With the return of Choli Hartono, MD, medical director of pancreas transplantation, we are embarking on important research projects to help the survival of the pancreas transplant.

Some highlights of our program :

** Steller success of kidney transplant, patient survival, and graft survival.

** Personlized care: each patient has their own attending physician who sees them on a regular basis often in conjunction with the patient’s original nephrologist.

** The second largest live donor transplant program in the country.

** Leader in paired kidney exchange

** A very active pancreas transplant program under the leadership of Drs. José Figueiro and Choli Hartono

** Advanced laparoscopic techniques for live renal donation initiated by Dr. Joseph Del Pizzo, urologist at NYPH

**Ongoing/upcoming research projects to further improve the transplant experience:

  • Protocol biopsies for pancreas transplant recipients to help detect early rejection
  • Investigations utilizing certain drugs (tacrolimus) once per day vs. twice per day
  • Protocol to combat a kidney virus (BK virus) in transplant patients

We are looking forward to continued success with the goal of offering transplants to all patients who need them. As we continue our collaboration with the NewYork Presbyterian Hospital, we know that Rogosin patients will get the best possible care.
