Transplantation

Mark is a 47 year old single parent who had diabetes and kidney disease. He had become a ‘brittle' diabetic with difficult to control blood glucose levels. On several occasions, he slipped into a diabetic coma and Mark's teenage son, Stephen, had to get emergency care for him. His overall condition was worsening.

Mark was put on the transplant list by his doctors at The Rogosin Institute and he received a kidney/pancreas transplant at New York-Presbyterian/Cornell in 2005.
Mark stayed in the hospital following his transplant for five days. "It's remarkable how such an important, life-saving procedure can be done in such a short time," he said. "I speak to people about what it's like to be transplanted and it is one of the greatest things for someone in that situation. Being on the list and being affiliated with Rogosin was a complete package. The end result is remarkable."

Mark's quality of life dramatically improved. He is no longer a diabetic and doesn't need insulin. Thanks to his transplant, Mark is truly enjoying life again. He and his son, Stephen, are sharing an active life, including their love of travel and Mark's passion for photography.

After undergoing the kidney/pancreas transplant, Mark says he has the freedom to do the things he enjoys. "There's overwhelming joy. There's happiness in being alive. I am extremely happy."
